Company Description: A f I D places experienced accounting professionals with established non-governmental organisations (NGOs) across East Africa, Ghana, Cambodia and Bangladesh. We provide our partners with a completely free structured volunteer programme designed specifically to strengthen the financial management and planning capabilities of small grass-root community led organisations; healthcare clinics, micro-finance schemes, small enterprise initiatives, rural cooperatives, streetchild centres & orphanages, gender-based rights groups, conservation projects, vocational training colleges and community schools - organisations that are doing amazing work to tackle extreme poverty and inequality in their communities but sadly have little or no access to these vital skills and services.
Job Description: We offer a unique short term-high impact volunteering programme designed specifically to strengthen the financial management and planning capabilities of small grass root organisations. Assignments range from 2 weeks to 6 months, dependent on the agreed objectives and the range and depth of skills required, with 3 primary areas of focus; 1. Financial Health Assessment. Working alongside their local partner each volunteer will conduct a basic financial health assessment using Health Check from Mango (www.mango.org.uk). This is a simple set of questions specifically designed for small and medium sized NGOs. By the end of the assessment you and your partner will be able to tell if the financial management of your programme is healthy and where it may need attention. This will also act as an invaluable benchmarking tool for the organisation to assess the progress of its long-term development strategy. 2. Coaching and Developing Talent Coach and develop the basic accounting and financial control skills of the key staff members responsible for the long-term financial management of the programme; building confidence and instilling a strong sense of direction amongst the team. Reviewing expenses, project income, bank reconciliations and cashbooks; resolving discrepancies, celebrating economies and demonstrating the benefits of transparent and consistent reporting. 3. Financial Planning and Budgets. In collaboration with your local programme directors create and review workable, easy to understand monthly, 1 & 5 year financial plans and budgets; providing guidance on their use as management tools when planning for a sustainable, cost effective future. Additional responsibilities may include; Donor Relations o Assist in the preparation and presentation of financial information for funding proposals. o Provide an independent overview and analysis for overseas stakeholders. o Develop credit risk strategies for the creation of new local Micro-Financing Programmes. Sourcing New Local Partners We actively promote a "Good Neighbour Strategy" whereby partners and volunteers are encouraged to develop close working relationships with other local community organisations; sharing knowledge, resources and goodwill. All assignment objectives include the championing of best practice and the facilitation of meaningful dialogue across these organizations, alongside the sourcing of new prospective partners. Online Work plans & Reports To facilitate an equal exchange of ideas and to promote best practice all partners and volunteers are provided with their own web page where they are encouraged to post programme profiles, work plans, blogs and queries. Online Question & Answer Discussion Forum All volunteers (past and present) and partners are encouraged to use our secure online Q&A Discussion Forum to post project queries or requests and to actively assist those raised by others in the field.

Core qualifications: Believe it or not it is surprisingly easy for seemingly normal people to achieve amazing results, changing lives for the better. You do not need the patience of Mother Teresa or the survival skills of Ray Mears to be a great volunteer. All you need is a little belief, the time and of course the will. There are a few other boxes you will also need to tick; Extensive professional accounting experience , Membership or affiliation to a recognised accountancy body e.g. ACCA & ICAEW , A record of providing advice to others, Experience in adapting to new cultures and conditions, Fluency in written and spoken English, Bags of initiative and resourcefulness, Honesty, patience and of course compassion.
