Jobseekers aged over 50 can take heart from the latest job market figures which show that more over 50s are finding and keeping jobs.....that's assuming people aged over 50 are happy to keep working.
Strikingly, the percentage of over 65s who are now working is twice that of 30 years ago. Back in 1985 some 4.9% of over 65s were in paid employment now the figure is over 10%. Considering that there are more over 65s in the population now that figure is quite astounding.
As for men aged 50 to 54, some 85.7% are now employed which again is back to a level last seen in the 1980s. Having said that, back in the 50s, around 90% of men aged 60 to 64 were working compared to 60% today. This sharp fall is due mainly to increased affluence and better pensions and benefits which enable more older workers to call it a day.
