Over 50s jobseekers feature in record employment figures

The latest UK employment numbers show that there are more people employed in the UK than at any other time. At 31.39million workers it is a record high.

The new employment total has risen by 267,000 and jobseekers aged over 50 accounted for over 50% of the increase at 165,000.

The number of people aged over 65 still working passed the 1million mark some time ago. It’s now up to 1.2million and looks set to keep growing due to financial pressures on older people and a desire to stay economically active.

Over the last 12 months the total of employed people has risen by 588,000 and around three quarters of the rise is due to full-time jobs.

“The outlook for jobseekers aged over 50 has steadily improved since 2013”, says Keith Simpson, managing director of SkilledPeople.com, the jobsite specialising in helping employers find quality experienced workers among the over 50s. “The pool of experienced people aged over 50 that employers can recruit from has shrunk considerably meaning that more recruiters are willing to seriously consider applications from people with 25 years of experience or more.”
