Employment figures are good news for older jobseekers aged over 50

The latest employment figures from the government show that employment rose by a sizeable 167,000 in the last quarter of 2018. For job hunters aged over 50 this is very significant as it means the pool of experienced, skilled people is shrinking fast and employers are less likely to practice ‘under the table’ age discrimination.

The UK employment rate is 75.8% of people aged 16 to 64. As there are fewer younger people entering the jobs market this means that recruiters have got to set their sights on older applicants if they want to fill vacancies.

“The jobs landscape has changed dramatically for people aged over 50,” says Keith Simpson of SkilledPeople.com, the jobsite which concentrates on sourcing quality staff aged over 50 for employers. “Back in 2011 and 2012 age discrimination was rife and, whilst it still goes on, enlightened employers are focusing more on the benefits employing older workers can bring to their operations. As a result there are now more people aged over 65 working than ever before.”
