Over 50s employment hits a record high

The number of people aged over 50 working in the UK continues to grow and grow.

The latest figures from the ONS show that the employment level for people aged 50 and over stood at slightly more than 10 million for the period from September to November 2018.

When records began in 1992, workers aged 50 to 64 represented 21% of the total UK workforce. Incredibly, that proportiuon has now grown to 31%.

Therefore, around one in three workers are aged over 50 once people in employment aged over 65 are included.

Just over nine million people aged 50 to 64 are now in employment according to the latest figures  - up from 8.8 million between September and November 2017. While 1.2 million of people aged 65 and over are also still working. This is up from 1.1 million last year says the ONS.

"This is good news for older jobseekers," says Keith Simpson of the over 50s jobsite SkilledPeople.com, "as it shows that more and more employers are opening their minds to the value that older workers can give."
